A Man’s Best Friend – Film by Marvin Siclait

A scene from Marvin's film "A Man's Best Friend".

It goes without saying that filming making and photography are integral parts of skateboarding. The task of filming or taking photos of your friends skating often acts as a conduit towards other creative endeavors. Recently our very own customer service wizard, Marvin Siclait put together a badass short film. I had no idea that Marvin makes shorts, nor, did I know he is in film school. With that I had to know more, check out his latest work and find out more about the filmmaker below.

Interview with Marvin:

First things first. How long have you been making skits and how’d you get into it?

I started making skits in the 8th grade and got really involved with film & video all throughout high school and now college. Read More >

Lakai Vincent 2 with Skyler

We always have a lot to be hyped on, for starters, it’s spring and that fresh feeling is taking over. Speaking of fresh, new to Lakai’s Spring ’16 lineup is Vincent Alvarez’s second pro model, the Vincent 2 and it’s hella fresh.

For those unfamiliar with Vicent, he burst onto the scene after winning DC‘s King of LA contest in 2007.  That one contest propelled a seemingly unknown Vincent to an overnight sensation and put him on everyone’s radar. Most importantly, his performance put him on Sam Smyth’s radar (Sam is team manager for Girl Skateboards & Chocolate).  Smyth would just have to track down Vincent first.. As legend has it, Vincent won a prepaid phone at the DC contest and exchanged number’s with Smyth but never made contact past this exchange. Once Vincent’s phone ran out of minutes there was no way to contact him. Eventually Smyth was able to find him and the rest is history, Vincent picked up a spot on Chocolate skateboards and eventually the legendary Lakai footwear. Read More >

2016 March Radness Skateboard Contest

Being a meteorologist has to be the cushiest job out there. All you have to do is make some haphazard prediction once a day about what the weather will be like in the coming hours. You don’t even have to be right. In fact, you can be dead wrong the vast majority of the time and no one would ever call you on your crap. I’d love to be able to BS my way through life, but that wouldn’t make for a very good experience for you guys. And, if skaters were able to BS their ways through their craft, there would be no where near the level of skateboarding we saw at this year’s March Radness.

Weather predictions aside, every March we are honored to bring you the raddest (pun intended) grassroots skateboard contest around. March Radness was an epic battle between the area’s top skaters. Standouts from the street division include Reggie Kelly, Tommy Stephan, Greyson Beal, Yosef Bubes, Robin Magby, Niko Howard, Wes Lembo, Gage Gum, Carson Lybbert, Grant Stavas, and Bobby Henson. The semi-finals were a who’s who of Atlanta skateboarding. In the finals, Jake Wooten’s edged out Greyson Beal and Tommy Stephan for the win. Read More >

Miles Silvas Q&A for Official

Miles Silvas for Official
Miles Silvas rocking his signature Official Headwear cap.

I tend to think of myself as a huge skate nerd, and I am, for the most part. Nearly every morning waking up consists of checking the feeds for whatever I missed out on  while sleeping but most importantly, I check the boards (Slap Magazine’s forum). I have been doing the latter for god knows how long, so it’s not everyday I see amazing footage from someone I have never heard about. For the most part, normally, I have some idea of who’s who and what’s going on. So when someone drops some new amazing footage without hearing any rumblings, it makes you take note.

The first time I heard of Miles Silvas or I should say “saw” was when I watched his  Welcome to Royal Truck’s video. For such a quick clip that introduction always stuck out in my mind. I think it’s partially due to the clashing cymbals of Love’s Seven and Seven Is playing  mixed with the kickflip front board at the end. That shit hit me like a ton of bricks. It immediately became obvious that’d we’d be seeing a lot more of him in the near future. Read More >

Ambush x DLX: The Build Project

Ambush and Deluxe have been teaming up to push skateboarding for decades, so when DLX came to us with the idea of The Build Project, we jumped on it.

The premise is simple, DLX stocked a donation bucket with $50 starter cash and sent it to our shop (in addition to many other shops throughout the country). We had 30 days to take donations from our local community and build a DIY spot with that money. After a month we raised $452 and were ready to build.

Our shop team (both employees and riders), along with a select group of homies spent 4 days building and came up with this.

We hope you enjoy skating it and take this opportunity to build more features at Speed Zone. Special thanks to Deluxe and our local skate culture. You guys made this happen. Read More >

Zeke Logan – Caswell’s Choice Winner

Volcom’s Wild in the Parks tour had a tumultuous visit to Atlanta. The contest was originally slated to take place at the Kennesaw Skatepark, but days of unrelenting rain moved the event to Hazard County Skatepark. From there, it was all sunny skies and rainbows, particularly for our very own Zeke Logan.

Zeke won Caswell’s Choice as the longtime pro’s favorite skater at the Atlanta Wild in the Parks stop. As part of Zeke’s recognition, he got to skate with the Volcom team at his favorite spots throughout Atlanta. Check the vid from the day:

And, Zeke has an open invitation to compete in the Wild in the Parks finals at The Berrics as well. Wish him luck.

Damn Am Atlanta 2015 Photo Recap

The Team At Damn Am 2015
From Left To Right: Zeke, Bobby, Wes, and Skyler

The boys went down to Damn Am 2015 this weekend hosted at Hazard County Skatepark.  Jona Owings, owner of Hazard County Skatepark, is probably the best host out there.  The hospitality his park exhibits is top notch.  From friendly dudes behind the counter, to Jona himself outback cooking burgers, hotdogs and delicious chicken, this is the type of shit you can only find in the south.

The weekend started on Friday with a day of practice and a Welcome To Town Bowl Jam, which was mighty epic.  Saturday began with qualifying heats from over 100 skateboarders from around the world.  Oh and free beer.  Yoshi Tanenbaum and Jamie Foy ended out the day by qualifying in first and second place earning them the Golden Tickets for the weekend.  The Golden Ticket allows you to bypass the semi-finals and go straight to the finals.  Our very own Zeke Logan, placed in the top 30 skaters on Saturday and was able to advance to the semi-finals.  Sunday was jam packed with semi-finals, finals, and then the Independent best trick contest.  Zeke finished out the weekend in 24th place.  Stoked. Daily Bread vs. Rhett Whatley

Rhett Whatley has been mixing music for years.

Before there was a social media marketing team here at Ambush there was the lone wolf of the web, Rhett Whatley, who handled it all himself.  Rhett graduated Kennesaw State University with a degree in Marketing while working at the shop (Ambush Board Co.) and our ecommerce companies (BuyWake.com/BuySkateShoes.com/BuySnow.com/CheapSk8Shoes.com).  He helped our business establish an online persona and we continue to carry forward that mantle today.  We are grateful for all the support and we promise to continue to support him and his music!

Daily Bread

In his humble beginnings of sampling and layering beats he was good…I remember thinking, “Dude this is your third track you’ve ever made?”  Fast forward and observing from a far, Rhett would lace me up with every mp3 he was making.  At one point, I looked in my iTunes library under the folder I made for him and there was over 100 songs equaling 5 hours worth of tracks.  Rhett has an extensive background in wakeboarding and competed on The Pro Wake Tour for a few years.  I can’t remember the year, but back in the day he won the PWT in Portland.  Immersed in wakeboarding his early music could be heard on such wake projects as “The Way” DVD.  It’s pretty solid to be a rider in a legit wake video, but to have also done the soundtrack is literally unheard of.
